What kind of wood is used?
We build our log furniture out of Douglas Fir and Manzanita. Both species are indigenous to Southern Oregon.
Douglas Fir is a conifer that can grow to be up to 250 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter. This tree is routinely used for lumber and makes up about ¼ of the lumber that the United States produces. Douglas Fir is also used for Christmas trees and to make paper and cardboard. Fir can grow very densely in the forest and in order to allow some trees to grow larger, other trees are selectively cut. These poles are then used for furniture making in the 2-6 inch diameter size. Fir furniture has a clean and tidy look while still having the outdoor feel.
Manzanita, actually considered a shrub is known for its deep red bark and remarkable twisting shapes. Once the tree dies, the bark will turn grey. This process takes on average, between 25-30 years. Once finished, it can be cut and sanded to reveal the same deep red color as well as some tan coloring. This extraordinary wood helps create a wild and untamed look in your home.
Is Southern Oregon Log Furniture machine made?
No, each piece of art is handmade by our craftsmen.
How do I care for my log furniture?
For indoor items, regular furniture polish is all you need to maintain your furniture. For outdoor furniture, use any clear wood protective agent. Thompson's Water Seal is our favorite. Spray it on every 3-6 months for best results.
How long will my log furniture last?
Southern Oregon Log Furniture is built heavy duty to last many years. We have seen many of our furnishings passed on from one generation to the next. With proper care, it can be heirloom furniture.
What kind of finishes or stains do you use?
Our standard finish is a polyurethane blend. We normally leave all of our furniture unstained, but we would be able to customize your piece to any color stain and finish you request.
Can I get my furniture unfinished?
Yes, upon request, your furniture can be shipped with no finish. If you wish to do so, you could even stain or finish it yourself.
Will my furniture crack?
In dry environments, wood dries as time passes and will "check" or crack slightly. Our wood is kiln dried to a low moisture level in order to minimize the checking.
Where do you get your materials?
Our materials are retrieved from the woods of Southern Oregon. Permits allow us to take most of our wood from BLM and Forest Service land as well as from private individuals.
